Paragraphs-Mitchel

Summarizer-Alex F.

Mike Tudisco Group leader
The characters in The Road are a man and his child. They are forced to walk through a barren aftermath of some horrible catastrophe hoping to find a safer and better place. The father is very protective of his child and obviously loves him very much. He is also understanding and loving. The boy is quiet and very protective of himself. He is always scared and frightens easily. He also has a loving heart and will not hurt anything.

Mitchell Raver- Quotes

"They left the cart in a gully covered with the tarp and made their way up the slope through the dark poles of the standing trees"

"He woken before dawn and watched a gray day break"

"The blackness he woke to on those nights was sightless"

"In dreams his pale bride came to him out of a green and leafy canopy"

"Something nameless in the night, love or matrix"

Nick Zevits-Questions

1. What kind of relationship does the father and son have?
Not such a good relationship because they do not talk that much to each other and there is long periods of silence.

2. What do you think happened to the world?
Global Warming occurred like in the movie Knowing.

3. What do you think happened to the father's wife?
She left the father and got killed.

4. What is the reason the father is still living?
If the kid was not there with him, he would have killed himself by now.

5. If you were in that position, what would you do?
I would kill myself.

Alex Falzarano Summarizer

The first group discussion of the second marking period started the same way the first did. The group was all over the place and things did not settle down until halfway into the discussion. Nick Z started the discussion with his open-ended questions such as what kind of a relation ship did the father and the son have? Also he asked the group to explain what they though had happened to the earth. Ryan patty was also questions and some of his questions were, who would you feel if you were in this position? He also asked were the father and son would end up at the end of the story. To be honest I did not hear Mitchell read aloud his quotes that he picked out. Over this entire group discussion wasn’t a complete disaster, but I think Mike should have controlled the group a little more, or at least done a better job with it.

Week 2 :

Group leader-Mitchell Raver

Ryan Patti failed to bring his quotes to school and gets a zero.
The language in the book is really not confusing at all and is very easy to comprehend. It is very well detailed and the story line is really organized.

Ryan Quotes-

1. Pg 37: "It took 4 more days to come down out of the snow and even then there were patches of snow in certain bends of the road and the road was black and wet from the up-country runoff beyond that."

2. Pg 45: "They slept that night in the truck and in the morning the rain had stopped and they unloaded the cart and passed everything under the truck to the other side and reloaded it."

3. Pg 47: "They camped that night in the woods on a ridge over-looking the broad piedmont plain where it stretched away to the south.

4. Pg 52: "Trekking the floor of a mineral sea where it lay cracked and broken like a fallen plate."

Group Summarizer: Nick Zevits

Fridays meeting was not that successful. Ryan forgot his work at home, and Alex was not at school friday. Mitchell was group leader and i was the summarizer, so we could only listen to Mike's questions. All of the questions were very good open ended questions which we talked about for ten minutes. Everyone contributed their ideas and the book discussion was very interesting.

Once Mike finished his job, we did not know what else to do. At first, everyone helped Mitchell with his question, but then he finished. With the time remaining, people were doing words and their stories and other homework. Hopefully next week everyone is present and prepared where we can talk about the book for the whole class period.

Week 3:

Person A (Group Leader)- Nick Zevits
On your group's wiki page, discuss the mood or tone of your book. What is the overriding emotion of this book? What examples back up your claim?

The mood of the book is suspense and sorrowful. The book is suspenseful because you are wondering what will happen next and if they will survive. The mood of the book is sorrowful because it is taking place at a time when the world came to complete anarchy. Some examples of complete anarchy is when the "bad guys" catch other humans and use them for food, like in the cellar of the one house. Another example is when the dad and the kid go to the beach and leave the cart behind. When they went to find the cart, somebody stole it.

Mike Tudisco-“Quotes”

1 The boy lay his head in the man’s lap. After a while he said: They’re going to kill those people aren’t they? Yes.

2 He was beginning to think that death was finally upon them and that they should find someplace to hide where they would not be found.

3 How many days to death? Ten? Not so many more than that.

4 Oh my god he whispered. Oh my god.

5 Crates upon crates of canned goods. Tomatoes, peaches, beans, apricots, canned beef.

6 What do I eat first?
Whatever you like.

Alex Falzarano-quotes

1."In the night he heard hideous shrieks coming from the house and he tried to put his hands over the boys ears and after a while the screaming stopped"

2. "Broken limbs and a few standing trunks stood stripped and burnt looking on the gray landscape"

3. "At a crossroads they sat in the dusk and he spread out the pieces of the map and studies them"

4. "he put the boy to bed it he bunk and smoothed his filthy hair on the pillow and covered him with blankets"

5. "He had been visited in a dream by creatures of a kind he'd never seen before"

6. "Like the bowels of some great beast he had never seen before"

MItchell Raver - summarizer
Everyone had their work that they were supposed to do, mostly everyone read aloud what they had even though it took a while for everyone to settle down and Alex was absent. I did not hear mike read his quotes though.

Week 4:

GROUP LEADER Alex Falzarano
The theme of the book is Survival because the boy and the father are fighting to go south for warmer weather and they need to push through the starvation and weather conditions. Some of the images that are in the book are grey skies, barren landscape and starvation. All of these images represent earth during the post-apocalypse and what the people have to put up with.

Mitchell Raver- Quotes

1. "They plodded on, thin and filthy as street addicts."

2. "The land was gullied and eroded and barren."

3. "They hid the cart and went up the slope among the rocks.'

4. "They walked into the little clearing, the boy clutching his hand."

5. "The sloughs by the roadside motionless and gray."

Person C-Nick Zevits
Pg. 107 paragraph1: He stood at a rise in the road and tried to take his bearings in the twilight. They left the pike and took a narrow road through the country and came at last upon a bridge and a dry creek and they crawled down the bank and huddled underneath.

Pg. 117 paragraph 1: Crate upon crate of canned goods. Tomatoes, peaches, beans, apricots. Canned hams. Corned beef. Hundreds o gallons of plastic jerry jugs.

Pg. 119 paragraph 3: “I don’t want you to get sick.” “I won’t get sick.” “You haven’t eaten in a long time.” “I know.” “Okay.”

Pg. 126 paragraph 3:The town has been abandoned years ago but they walked the littered streets carefully, the boy holding onto his hand. They passed a metal trash dump where someone had once tried to burn bodies.

Pg. 147 paragraph 1: Then all went on. When he looked back the old man had set out with his cane, tapping his way, dwindling slowly on the road behind them like some storybook peddler from an antique time, dark and bent spider thin and soon to vanish forever. The boy never looked back at all.

Tudisco-questions

1 would you have also been angry at the child for loosing the gun?

2 Why did the father go onto the boat?

3 Do you think the man did the right thing to the thief?

4 Why was the boy so sad after the robber incident?

5 Why was the dads find on the ship so important?

Week 5:

Ryan- Discussion Director

After reading The Road by Cormac Mccarthy I would recommend this book to anyone that would want to read it. This book relates to me because if I was in the same position that these people were in I would be doing the same exact thing. If I was witnessing people getting canabilized I would be just as frightened and terrified as the people in the story were at that time in the book.

Mitchell Raver- Quotes

1. "When he woke in the woods in the dark and the cold of the night he'd reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him"

2. "If he is not the word of god, God never spoke"

3. "He lay listening to the water drip in the woods"

4. "If only my heart were stone"

5. "And the dreams so rich in color"

Alex Falzarano- quotes

“I will do what I promised, he whispered. No matter what. I will not send you in the darkness alone.”

“As they passed the last of the sad wooden buildings something whistled past his head and clattered off the street and broke up against the wall of the block building on the other side.”

“They went into the woods and the man squatted and looked at the gray and wasted figure under the tilted sheet of plywood.”

“Once there were brook trout in the steam in the mountains.”

“In the deed glens were they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mystery.”

Person C-Nick Zevits

  1. Where do you think the father and the son were trying to go? Why?
Go to a warmer place so it is easier to survive.

  1. What illness do you think the father suffered from? Do you think he was happy to die?
No, because his 4 year old kid was left in a world of cannibals. I also think he died from the ashes in the air.

  1. Do you think the man at the end of the book was lying when he said he had a wife and kids?
Yes, because it says the women hugged the kid when she saw him.

  1. Where do you think the man got his scar?
Fighting cannibals in order to protect him, and his family.

  1. Where do you think the man is trying to go?
South America, since it is a warmer climate

  1. Was there anything in the book you were confused by, why?
Most of the book, I did not see what was the point of what the dad and the kid did.

Tudisco summery

We began our last book club by taking a survey for school. This took about 15 minuets. After that, we got down to our book. After that, Michel told us his quotes. They were good. Alex read his quotes next witch were also good. After that, Nick asked a couple of really good questions. We all answered. In the last few minuets, we discuss some of the questions we had with the book. I didn't get how a mom could eat here own baby. All together, a great end to this marking periods book club :)
